About
This blog is meant to display my work as a photojournalist. I am currently a senior at the University of Oregon in Eugene pursuing a double major in magazine journalism and cinema studies with a minor in multimedia studies. I am spending my summer interning at the “Chinook Observer” a weekly newspaper out of Long Beach, Washington and in the fall I will work as a photographer and reporter for “Flux,” a UO journalism school magazine.

Greetings,
I just came across your ‘Braving the Bar: Shipwrecks’ story on Flux. I happened to be searching for information on the Arrow (sunk in Ocean Park, Washington 1947). My grandfather served on the Arrow as a Merchant Marine in World War II. There is precious little information about the Arrow, and was excited to read a story about the ship, even if it was it’s ultimate destruction. Was wondering if you had any more information/photos about the Arrow? Was a great read, thank you!
Sincerely,
Matthew Baker

Hi Matthew,
Wow! How cool! Well, I don’t have any other photos or much more info than what’s in the article. However, I would recommend checking out the book “Pacific Graveyard” by James A. Gibbs, that’s where I got much of my information. I’m not sure if you will find more in there but it might be worth a look and it’s a really cool book to look through anyway. Also, I got some of my information for the shipwreck pieces from the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, Washington. I know that they have a folder on the Arrow so there’s probably more info in there that I didn’t include in the article. They also probably have more photos of the shipwreck. I interned at the museum for two summers. I would give them a call, 360-642-3446, or go in if you live in the area and put in a research request. Mention my name as well and that you already have some information but are looking for more. Good luck! How small the internet world is!
Best,
Madeline

Thank you so much! It’s interesting that I can find more info on the ‘Belfast’ vs. ‘Arrow’. I appreciate your help, and will contact the museum to see if they have any more information!

Hi Madeline,
My name is Kaitlyn Hedges, and I’m on the staff of a magazine called Stowaway. The magazine is a travel magazine focused towards young adults. I’m currently writing an article on WWOOFing in Ireland, and while I was researching I stumbled onto some of your pictures from your WWOOFing experience. I was wondering if you would allow us to publish your photos along with the article. This is a completely non-profit magazine, so we wouldn’t be able to pay, but we would love to use your contributions. We would, of course, give you full attribution. Let me know if this would be possible.
Thank you!
–Kaitlyn Hedges
p.s. Whether or not you allow us to use your photos, I would like to say that I am very impressed. Keep up the great work!
